WEEK B

Principal's Message

Topic: As we approach the end of Semester One for 2024-2025 school year

Dear Students, Families, and Staff:

Our students have already experienced so much this school year. From picking up their new timetables to reconnecting with old friends, meeting new teachers, making new friends, and adjusting to life after summer—it has been a busy and exciting time!

This semester, our students have been working hard in their courses to develop the knowledge and skills needed to grow academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. We recognize that every student is on their own unique journey, striving to reach their personal potential, which looks different for each individual at GWSS.

Beyond delivering the curriculum, every staff member at GWSS plays an important role in supporting our students' overall well-being and success. We know that school can present unexpected learning challenges, but time and time again, we see our students rise to these challenges, demonstrating perseverance and achieving their best.

Every day at GWSS, we celebrate the amazing things our students accomplish—in the classrooms, in the hallways, through extracurricular activities, and within the broader community. These achievements reflect the meaningful learning experiences they gain both at school and in their personal lives.

One of the many ways we do this is to recognize our grade 12 students during Commencement. Our school has many awards available to graduating students. Students may be eligible if they:

Award winners are determined by the Commencement Awards Committee (made up of Garth Webb teachers and administrators) and/or through academic standing. In the Spring our students will be provided with a list that includes a summary of the various awards available to the Garth Webb Graduating Class of 2025. You may also look at a detailed list by checking out our website.

In the Fall of each school year we also honor students (specifically Grade 9, 10, and 11s) who have achieved top marks in the previous school year. This is not just about recognizing high marks; it’s about fostering a supportive and ambitious educational environment that motivates all students to reach their full potential. Students on the Honour Roll are those who meet a specific the criteria which are: courses taken during the school year through the HDSB (Sept - June); Grade 9/10 - top 8 courses are used in the calculation; and Grade 11 - top 7 courses are used in the calculation with a minimum average of 79.5%. These results are obtained through the Honour Roll report in the HDSB Central Data Report System.

In conclusion, as we approach the end of Semester One, let us take a moment to celebrate the incredible efforts, achievements, and growth we have witnessed across our school community. At GWSS, we are committed to fostering a culture of excellence, resilience, and inclusivity, where every student has the opportunity to shine in their own unique way.

To our students, families, and staff—thank you for your hard work, dedication, and unwavering support in making this semester a success. Together, we are creating a vibrant and inspiring environment where lifelong learning and meaningful connections thrive.

As we look ahead to the second half of the school year, let’s continue to build on the strong foundation we have laid, striving for even greater success and shared accomplishments. Here's to a bright and fulfilling rest of the school year!

Kindly,

Luisa Botelho

January 2025 Final Evaluation Block

The Halton District School Board’s 2024-2025 Ministry approved school year calendar’s semester 1 exams days are from Thursday, January 23 to Wednesday, January 29, 2025. Helping Grade 9 Students Prepare for Exam Season

The transition to high school comes with many firsts, including the Grade 9s' first exam season. To support our students during this exciting but often challenging time, the Student Senate is hosting a workshop titled "Tips and Tricks for Exam Season".

This interactive session is designed to equip Grade 9s with the tools they need to approach their exams with confidence. Topics will include effective study techniques, managing stress, and making the most of their time.

We ran a very well attended session this past week. If you missed it, please plan to attend this week on January 15.

Subjects : Math, Science, Geography, and English.

📅 Date: Wednesday, January  15, 2025
🕚 Time: 11:15 AM - 12:00 PM (Lunch Period)
📍 Location: Room 2020 (second floor)

This initiative is proudly supported by our Student Senators: Aaisha Hassan, Arthur Chao & Reeva Jiyani, who are working closely with the school administration to make this event possible. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 1hassanaai@hdsb.ca, 1chaoart2@hdsb.ca, 1jiyaniree@hdsb.ca

We encourage all Grade 9 students to attend this workshop and take advantage of the opportunity to learn from their peers and experienced students. Let’s make this exam season a success!

GWSS Washrooms

Our "Have Your Say" survey, along with daily conversations with students, has highlighted that washrooms are an area of the school where students do not feel safe due to gatherings of others.

Please remind your child that students are not permitted to gather, socialize, or vape in the washrooms.

We will be regularly monitoring and clearing the washrooms. If students are found consistently gathering in the washroom, school-based consequences will be enforced, and parents/guardians will be notified.

Students are encouraged to gather and socialize in designated areas of the school. Our goal is to ensure all students feel safe and comfortable throughout the school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We are here to support you and your child.

GWS School Council Meeting

Our next School Council meeting is this Monday, January 13 at 7 pm online.  All parents/guardians are welcome to attend school council meetings anytime.  A link to the meeting was shared with parents/guardians this past Friday.

Visit the Garth Webb School Council page here.

Please Keep Our Parking Lot Clean

We would like to take a moment to remind everyone about the importance of maintaining the cleanliness and safety of our school parking lot, particularly after school hours and weekends. We take great pride in our school and its facilities, and it is essential that we all work together to keep them in good condition.

Please be mindful of the following:

By taking these small steps, we help ensure that our parking lot remains a safe, welcoming place for all members of our school community. Let’s all do our part to protect and respect the environment around us.

Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to keeping our school safe and well-maintained.

Important Parking Lot Reminders

Please be aware that our parking lot is very busy at school entry and dismissal times. It is preferred that students walk to school whenever possible. However, if you do end up driving your student to school (or for students who are driving themselves), we advise that people arrive early to avoid delays especially during the winter months and inclement weather. Come early to get a spot and please do not park in “no parking zones”.  Arriving early is even more important now that the Town has closed the parking lot by the park for the winter.

STUDENT PARKING PASS

Students who will be driving to school must have their vehicle registered with the main office and must display a school parking pass in their vehicle while it is parked on school property.

Please use this form to request a parking pass. You will need to have your vehicle make/license plate information to register for a parking pass. Students are permitted to park in the lot closest to the front entrance to the school ONLY. The office will contact you via email when passes are ready. Please note that having a parking pass does not guarantee you a parking spot. You must arrive early (before 8:15 am is recommended) to be sure to get a spot as it’s first come, first served.

Thank you for helping us to keep everyone safe!

Grad Photo Bookings Now Open at Edge Imaging Studio

If your grade 12 student missed getting a graduation photo taken at the school, you can now book a photo session at the Edge Imaging Studio in Burlington. Please book as early as possible. We can't guarantee that your student's photo will be in the grad composite or yearbook if you are booking at the studio, but we will do our best if the booking happens before the end of February.

Please follow the steps below to book your session:

IMPORTANT FINAL STEP

Please send an email to Kerri Lee (leeke@hdsb.ca) in the main office once you have had your photo session and we will do our best to make sure your photo is included in the yearbook and composite. Again, booking early will help with that as well.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Edge Imaging directly at 1-888-416-3343.
